Can I change the Internal Index (used by Backoffice) to filter out some node types without screwing up my site?

My client loves the Backoffice search, but they have a lot of content they don't need to access in that way (child content, etc), so they want to remove some Document Types from that index to have it be more relevant.

Can I add the code to the InternalIndexSet to remove some nodes without messing up the site? Do other parts of the site besides that search use this? It says "Used by back-office, DO NOT REMOVE" in the code, but I didn't know if adding to it would mess anything up.

I don't see any way to change what index the search box is using, so it appears my only way to change that is to change what's indexed.

    Thanks for the input!

Yeah! It is old question but still not answered. I can not find any recomendation for proper configuration of Examine indexes. I would like to know if I can optimize InternalIndexSet in Umbraco 7 or it will cause any issues.
