Changing the theme colors/Creating my own theme

Hi,

I've just stumbled upon your starter kit. I really want to use it for our website. The problem is, I can't seem to customize the theme colors, I've tried updating them and then publishing the update but its not reflecting my desired color whenever I browse the website.
