When I try to install the example site in a fresh umbraco 7.1.3 instance with Merchello, I get this error:
Could not upload file System.Exception: Error unpacking extension...
---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\inetpub\sites\umbraco\App_Data\adf1f74e-d51d-4671-9fae-297e31c5b1bb\msvcr90.dll'
or one of its dependencies. The module was expected to contain an
assembly manifest. [...yadda...]
The example site is a site build not a package or a starter kit. You should be able to simply unzip the archive and run it in IIS Express.
Originally I had the x_example.site.zip in the documentation tab to avoid this confusion, but received feedback that some people thought it ought to go in the package files section. I think for the next version I'll move back.

The example site is a site build not a package or a starter kit. You should be able to simply unzip the archive and run it in IIS Express.
