The tab order is not being preserved, from the package, it doesn't look like umbraco (4.7.1) is saving the tab order from the site, so when the package is created, the tabs are just in any old order.

    Hi Kevin,

Being from Liverpool too, it's great to see you releasing this package! (and that liverpool.gov.uk is in the process of being converted to Umbraco too - I some background in Tridion also).

You are right about the tab order - the package installer does not maintain those values.

    Cheers, Lee.

    Lee,Kevin,

    That is bloody awesome great to see finally public sector (I know there are some NHS trusts out there) getting into Umbraco. Ps I did help of a proposal todo some work years ago on liverpool.gov site we didnt get the job.  Im hoping due to current financial climate more public sector moving to Umbraco. I may need to get back into developing my ipsv data type again which also in theory should handle other meta data formats for public sector ;-}

Herefordshire Council are using Umbraco to rebuild the council website and many related sites. Investigations and work have been underway for around 9-12 months with plans to go live a beta version towards the end of this year and reworking the beta for a July launch.

    Hi Kevin,

This starter kit is great! I've spent a few hours looking at it and really like the approach you have taken!

We have been trying to push umbraco as a viable solution for public sector clients for some time. As such we have been working on a similar project for the last 8 months.

We have taken a different approach by creating a set of packages that can be used to provide some functionality commonly required on these types of sites.

We have (today) finally released some of these packages, although it's clear that there is an overlap to a degree, we feel that some of these packages could complement your starter kit and we would be more than happy to share these with you. It would also be great to catch up and and share ideas as it seems we have both an interest in this area.

We are going to be at the UK umbraco Fest in London on the 4th - Are you going?

definitely going to go of and build a site with both in - I'm not a big IPSV fan, but I think that's a big boon for many

    can't make the 4th  :( worse luck.

Cool - shame about the 4th, maybe we'll catch up sometime at a local umb event! let us know how you get on with the packages or have any questions. Likewise, I'll continue to have a look at the starter kit and put together some feedback.

    considering using this to.

    Hi Hywel.

have you tried adding ?umbdebugshowtrace=true this will get umbraco do put debugging info on the screen, there might be some clues in that ?

if you cut and paste some of the debug trace here i might be able to spot what's doing it.

Hi Kevin thanks for the reply,
No not yet but i will try that today, will also try  setting it up on an older verison of umbraco instead of 6.

Also do you know of any public sector websites that are built on umbraco?
We have been using umbraco for all our sub sites at Merthyr and are looking to rebuild our corporate site on umbraco as well just wondering if anyone has rebuilt there corporeate sites yet using it have found some but just wondering if there were anymore

    Hi Kevin

Just came across this package for a few Council sites we are building.

It looks great, and really contains a lot of useful features.

Just one thing - when installing it we came across the issue of not being able to view the content of the Master-Pages from within the admin section.

Any idea why this may be occurring? I can provide more information if required but I wanted to check any known possibilties first.

    Thanks

Addendum - We have fixed the issue with no code appearing in the templates by making the following change to the config/umbracosettings.config file to tell Umbraco to use Mvc:

     MvcdefaultRenderingEngine>

    Thanks!

Hi. Thought I'd have a look at this as a possible starting point for an NHS site I need to develop. We are using version 4.11.10

First time I tried to install the package I got an error message. The 2nd time it seemed to install ok - I can view and change things in the admin system.

However when trying to run the site I get the following error

CS1061: 'Umbraco.Web.UmbracoHelper' does not contain a definition for 'TypedContentAtXPath' and no extension method 'TypedContentAtXPath' accepting a first argument of type 'Umbraco.Web.UmbracoHelper' could be found

The offending line of code is

    Line 23: var allNews = Umbraco.TypedContentAtXPath("//ulgNewsItem")

Any ideas - have I missed something in the setup or configuration? Have already changed the default rendering engine to MVC in the config file

Hi - the MVC starter kit was written for Umbraco 6.1 - so most of these errors will be because of the slight changes between the versions.

TypedContentAtXPath is a function added in umbraco v6.1 (it solved this problem - http://our.umbraco.org/forum/developers/razor/42491-Find-nodes-by-doc-type-and-list-properties )

If your stuck with 4.11.x I would suggest you have a dev version of 6.1 running and copy any bits you think you want into a 4.11.x install - that way you can catch any version stuff as you need it - you might find the v6.1 stuff is in a bit of the kit you don't need.

the other download (uLocalGov_2.0rc.zip) should run on umbraco 4.x but its not an MVC based solution, it's a bit older and only here as a reference really.

Thanks for the info - will try this out on v 6.

We've received some advice that 4.11.10 is a good choice for being the last really stable release, and has more packages. Not sure how widely that view is shared. We'd rather wait until v 7 settles down a bit so our choice is between 4 and 6 atm

    cheers

I would say v6.1 is rock solid now - there isn't actually a huge jump between v4 and v6 - but 6 does have nicer mvc and razor support.

The Umbraco 7 version of the LocalGov Starter Kit is now here

It's slightly simpler which means it works better as a package :)

I've separated out a few things because the packager doesn't like it when you do to many things at once, but this version seems to work well (except for a slight bug with the map picker) - would be good if you have time to take a look.

Works with 7.0.3 and 7.0.4 (haven't tested it with 7.0.2 but just install the latest anyway)

    Hi Kevin,

This is a really good package. Great job.

However I have a problem getting the site on.

I have just installed your Kit on umbraco 7.0.4 and installation went smoothly.

When i publish the site I get the following:

System.InvalidOperationException: The partial view 'SectionPageBlock' was not found or no view engine supports the searched locations. The following locations were searched:
    ~/Views/RenderMvc/SectionPageBlock.aspx

    ..........

It seems I don't have any partial views and other sublevels views?

    Do I do anything wrong?

    Ciao,

    Marco

    Hi Marco

yes, usync's job is to take the DB settings and put them onto the disk, so you can file sync across sites - so uSync doesn't actually copy the partial views or view files - it only does the bits of umbraco that have a database element - so that is

document types, media types, macros (definitions), data types, dictionary items, languages, stylesheets, templates

so as well as usync folder you will need to copy (at least) the follwing folders

css, scripts, templates, views, macroscripts, usercontrols, xslt

*while usync does templates and stylesheets - it does the DB bit of them, the file based bit of them you will still want to copy over.

    Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Sorry for the stupid question. I am really a Umbraco newbie and I am trying to convince my boss to use Umbraco instead of Tridion here at Centralbeds Council.

I am trying to build a proof of concept with your Kit.

Thank you for the support. This is all new to me and I am really exited about the all Umbraco world.

I will try to copy the files from your solution and see what's happen. I am still not really clear on how to do it but I will try.

    OK,

but im more stupid because i just answered a starter kit question with a usync response (i was in the wrong forum :) -

the starter kit should just work - but i updated it yesterday if you are still having problems try the v3.1 from the archive

if you are still having issues there is a online demo http://umblocalgov.jumoo.co.uk - if you drop me an email ([email protected]) i can set you up a demo user so you can have a poke around that.

    HI Marco,

yes i got confused by your question you should ignore all that copy stuff

you can try the previous version of the package http://our.umbraco.org/FileDownload?id=10527. I will double check the latest version works on 7.0.4 (i was updating it for the soon to be released 7.1 and might have missed something)

    Hi

I did some work on the kit - and I think the biggest issue is because it attempts to create the basic site layout during the package install.

for choice and well because i can - i have updated the kit so it installs and then offers you the opportunity to import the LGNL or SGNL website structures - this means you don't have to put a whole site structure into the kit if you don't want to. and it separates the kit and the navigation.

    http://our.umbraco.org/FileDownload?id=10730

tested on 7.1 works really nicely.

I haven't downloaded the most current yet so maybe you already picked it up (or maybe it's just me) but in 3.3, in the Site Design template, on line 13 I found:

    insertBefore: "<link rel=@quot;stylesheet" href="/css/",

and I think it should be:

    insertBefore: "<link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/",

    with a '&' instead of a '@'.

    Hi again Kevin,

The site I'm working on will use images at the top of key pages, some with color and/or text overlays.  Since you've done such an elegant job of structuring this kit to inherit properties, it seems a shame to start slapping nearly identical properties on each individual doctype that needs one.

I was thinking about maybe breaking the 'Page' structure down a bit more, maybe branching off below it into 'Fancy' and 'Plain' or some such, but that also seems kludgy.  Do you have any suggestions?

    Matthew

Depending on the number of properties i would be inclined to add them to the doctype - i would be reluctant to separate the doctypes up for images and colours, i would look at how much of that stuff you want the content editors to actually control and if its something that is going to be controlled at an individual page or more of a page area?

the section homepage doctype/template does a bit of that because they have secondary style sheets that are then applied to them and all pages underneath - this allows you to apply different styles to distinct sections of the site.

if it's more about individual page customizations I would be inclined to add them to a new tab on the relevant doctype - so that they don't get in the way of editors that don't need them.

having said all that there is no reason you can't put a more granular structure in the doctype tree, but you've just go to be wary of how quickly that can grow - not just for you developing it but for the amount of choices your going to be giving content editors.

Wise council, Kevin, thank you.  This is for probably section pages, landing pages and some notable project pages (roughly equivelant to the event items).  The idea is to shade out a portion of the image and overlay that with a few choice words of meaningful influence.  Since all of those pages and most others will have top images but not all would get the overlay treatment, I think I'll go with adding an image/media picker property to the content doctype's content tab, and also a new imagry tab with the overlay properties there as well, so it's available if they need it but not in the way of the daily grind.
