anyone else feel 4.5 isn't ready for production environments?

I've spent about a day and a half testing the new 4.5 release on a labserver (the install itself, installing packages, creating macro's, xslt, ...) and must say i'm getting the impression it would have been better to stick with version number 4.2 untill more testing was done?

I've created a number of bug reports and some posts in the forum about a few of the issues i'm experiencing, but was just wondering how other users are feeling about the latest version?

I think the install/upgrade can be a little tricky and that's causing more problems for people than anything else. Of course, not all packages that are out there have a 4.5 version ready so that can cause some issues.

But I haven't seen any significant bugs and overall am really pleased with this release. Having the preview feature fixed is a huge plus that far overrides any small bugs for us. And I really like the new xml schema, though I don't imagine I'll be using it on upgraded sites. The tree is much improved as well.

    Rik,

Sorry, I can't answer your question.

However it looks like you've done a lot of really useful testing, have you reported these bugs on Codeplex as well as here, as I believe the core team only respond to codeplex items.

Umbraco 4.5 is the most stable and tested version of Umbraco ever. I would definitely use Umbraco 4.5 for any NEW project I'm working on.

Most of the issues above are either user errors, issues with 3rd party packages or minor errors which we're ironing out.  As for upgrading an existing solution I'd only do it if I had a good reason and I'd wait a few weeks before doing so, especially if I'm using any 3rd party packages. If you do plan on upgrading, be sure to check this wiki entry first: http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/about/roadmap/umbraco-45/upgrading-to-umbraco-45

We'll go through all packages on Our the coming days and mark them whether they work for 4.5 or not.

    In reply to Niels,

going over all those packages might be a tough task no?
would it be appropriate to ask for a custm property on each project?  "target umbraco version"

that way you can reuse this for every new version that gets out and mark if your package is  4.x  or 4.5+  or ...
dont know if this should be a checklist or a free textfield or something...

    and on topic:

for an upgrade i would wait a few weeks too... we are following and testing umbraco 4.5 too, as it has quiet a few usefull solutions. Yet as with any release you can expect there to be left over (sometimes unforseen) errors. which need to be ironed out in the first month of the release.

it was like that with 4.0.2 (which recieved a 4.0.2.1) and 4.0.4 ( which already has its 4.0.4.2) i can only imagine the increase of possibilities for these minor issues to rise up with a release as big as 4.5.

I'd say yes, it is ready for production, but you have to keep in mind that many of the issues lay with code not created by umbraco HQ, meaning the community has to upgrade their packages!

    > tough task no

Nothing compared to the feeling that 3rd party packages makes people find many man-years of development not ready for production ;-)

After all that's why I founded the HQ - so that someone could do the hard work that's hard to get the community to do.

But yes, there's no such thing as a bugfree product. That's life. But the faster people adopt Umbraco 4.5 the faster we'll get those issues out. We're monitoring the tracker closely and have already associated the first batch of issues to a 4.5.1 release targeted later this summer. Keep them coming and participate through real world testing - it'll be worth it in the long run :)

The packager bugs are the only thing that are irritating me, but we're building a new project on 4.5 right now and definitely do not regret it.  It's much quicker in the backend and the new xml schema is much more sane.  It seems very stable for everything that concerns the user.

Also, the fix to the "right-click delete whole site" bug (new tree) is worth the price of admission alone ;-).

All in all, i'd say 4.5 is ready for production.
