    ASP.NET Version for Umbraco 4.5.1?

    Hi,

I can't find any place where it is stated CLEARLY what version of ASP.NET is needed to run Umbraco 4.5.1 without incident. I upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.5.1 and although the site itself works fine, I am seeing several issues in the CMS.  I don't KNOW that this is an ASP.NET issue, I am just guessing because I followed the upgrade instructions exactly and I can't think of anything else.   Below are the issues I am seeing:

    1. After logging in, the stylesheet doesn't load, until I then refresh the page.  I am also seeing the stylesheet half-load or not load all over.
    2. The "Installed Packages" folder does not appear in the Developer/Packages menu.
    3. Unable to install any New packages because after browsing for the zip fle, the "Load package" button is disabled.

I am also experiencing just slower and buggier performance in general.  Also, I installed (via WindowsUpdate) ASP.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (I had had 2.0) and when I go into IIS (5.1), this version does not appear in the dropdown on the ASP.NET tab.  Why not?  How am I supposed to do this?  What version am I supposed to have for Umbraco 4.5.1 and what configuration changes do I need to make, if any, after upgrading from 4.0.3?  Also, I guess there is a difference between what "Framework" you have and what "Version" you have, with regard to ASP.NET?  I know XSLT, and I LOVE Umbraco, but I am obviously not an expert with the environment and this is the first time I have had issues.

I need to deploy this thing within a week's time and am very concerned about the strange behaviors I'm seeing.  Any help out there would be sincerely and greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Garrett

    Hi Garrett,

just my 2 pence: Umbraco 4.5.1 will definitely work with .Net Framework 3.5 and 4 (if they ever had separate ASP.Net versions I haven't heard any such thing in a long time). I know you can have IIS6 running with .Net 3.5 and probably even 4, yet I think you would definitely have to do a couple tricky bits to get it working. The same might apply for IIS5.1, yet if I go by my personal feeling it will just get a bit uglier every time. The reason why you don't see .Net 3.5 in your drop down box will be that you need to push a cople of buttons in the right direction for it to work.

If you have to get the site up and running in a week I would seriously consider these options:

    - upgrade IIS to 7 which means Windows Server 2008

    - not use 4.5.1 but 4.0.4.2 instead (which we went for until we have sorted out our hosting environment)

    - try to find someone who know if you can get 3.5 running in IIS5.1 and also knows how and ideally does it for you

I would be interested if you have updates on the last point!. :)

Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear!

    Sascha

Well on our staging (and soon to be production) server, all we ended up having to do to fix these errors (this box has IIS7) was to allow Network Service modify permissions on the appropriate Umbraco folders, so that's a done deal it seems, but in my local environment, I am still having the above issues.  I have confirmed that IIS (5.1) is still running ASP.NET version 2.0.  I've made no changes, then, essentially-- just u[graded Umbraco.  So are we distilling this situation to the following?

    Umbraco 4.5.1 doesn't work with IIS5.1?

4.5.1 works fine with IIS 5.1 for me. If you're having the same problems locally, maybe it's a permission error there as well? I believe the 3.5 doesn't show in the ASP.NET drop down because 3.5 is basically still running 2.0.

It was INDEED a permission issue for me, too!  I'm ashamed for this, but I had failed to give the TOP LEVEL the necessary modify rights. Doh!

Thanks very much for your responses, guys.

So does that mean you got 4.5.1 to work without any problems and addtional modifications on IIS5.1?

Yes.  All the issues were fixed by proper permissioning.

Thanks to all for your efforts.
