Can I use Umbraco for a commercial website without a Pro license?

Hello all, After perusing Umbraco.com for a few months, I have become interested enough in the technology that I *think* I would like to use it as the CMS for the website project I am working on. What I am unsure of is what exactly does open source mean in relation to Umbraco? If I use the source from CodePlex, what license is attached to that codebase? My confusion stems from the fact that the umbraco.com site is advertizing "Pro" builds with a commercial license. What restrictions are placed upon the non-"Pro" code base? Thank you, Shaun

If you just want to build a website, then you don't need a pro license. No matter what kind of website.

The Pro license comes into play when for example:

    1. You want to rebrand the backend. (For example put your own logo on the login page)
    2. You want support from the HQ team
    3. You want to use some of the tools like courier/consierge
Without a license you can still extend umbraco all you want.
Also, I would remind you, that you probably do not need to get the source code from codeplex. Just use the binaries, and set up your site. In 99.9% of the time, you do not need to mess with the source of umbraco.

Didn't this change with the release of 4.5?

It might have. Maybe it only applies if you want to actually sell it. Check with the HQ guys to make sure, if you want to go in that direction :-)
