Actually I don't think that there's more than three gallery packages at all right now, according to the "gallery"-tag here. It must be the Designit Gallery Package, jqGallery package and the EyeCatch UmBox Image Gallery package. I haven't tried them all so I can't say which is better.
If you are not satisfied with any of he three, it's usually pretty easy to implement another gallery you find interesting. Eg. some of all of those jQuery galleries out there.
Top plugins/Extensions
Happy new Year Umbraco community, I have two questions:
1) In your opinion what are the must-have Umbraco plugins or extensions?
2) What are the top three photo gallery plugins/extensions.?

I haven't used any photo gallery extensions, I always roll my own
I listed my favourite plug-ins on another thread recently:

Since then, I would also add the RVContactForm and CultivSearchEngineSitemap.
