That is correct a root node IS the root node so should be accessble by the root of the domain.. As in '/'.. If you are using multiple root nodes, it means you are trying to run multiple sites from the one installation and therefore need to be using hostnames... A different domain per root node.
However looking at your screenshot, it seems you have your structure wrong - You need to create a 'Home' doctype which will be you root node and everything else should be under that. Not directly under the content node.. See example below
RootNodes - Link to Document is just a /
Hello there,
I am using Umbraco 4.6.1. In the properties tab --> Link to document field I get only a slash for root nodes.
The rest of the nodes have the link to document working as correctly.
This seemed to occur after an upgrade from 4.5.2.
At first I thought it was my XSLT and NiceURL not working, but it's definitly the link to document.
I have republished the entire site, no fix.
Does any one have any suggestions on what might be causing this?
Thank you

Ahh ic! Thanks Lee. I have adjusted my tree structure accordingly, and it now works :)
Oddly, it did used to work like this in an older version of Umbraco though.
Thanks you! Would have taken me ages to figure that out otherwise!
