See first identify you area of search. You want Whole site search or speficic node search?
after that you can impliment XSLT based search or user control (C#.Net based) search.
You can use XSLT search as a base: www.percipientstudios.com/.../span.
You can use it to search specific document type properties. You will
probably have to extend it to make a customized search with dropdowns
like you want but this will have done a lot of the work for you.
