I am sure this is answered somewhere but I had a good search around the main umbraco.org site and this our.umbraco.org not to mention the wikipedia entry and general googling, but found nothing.
So my follow up question is can some one put this vital peice of information somewhere more discoverable?
The name comes from the Danish word for an Allen (hex) key - the kind you get with Ikea flatpack. Doug Robar does a good explanation, see his video from the UK Festival 2010.
I was under the impression 'Umbraco' was Danish for the type of allen key that's bundled with Ikea furtniture, not sure tho (Google translate doesn't recogonise it).
You could create a new wiki page under one of the About pages? (Althought you can't create one directly under About, but one of those subpages ... maybe in "our.umbraco FAQ" or a new page under "Umbraco Core Values"?) ... would be a good way to contribute back to the community.
Why the name Umbraco ?

The actual translation is "umbrako".
Wow! that was quick, thanks people.
So for future Umbrak/c-ians where is this information, where should it be ?
Hi Rob,

I found that copy and pasting the New-Page link from other wiki sections on to the About URL allowed me to create
http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/about/what-does-umbraco-mean
Proberbly could do with a little more content/history, from small acorns ....
Good start Rob! At least, it gives others a basis to carry on from! #h5yr
Cheers, Lee.
is working on a reply...
