Someone suggested umbraco for a project I'm working on. A partial list of features i need are:
Users need to be able to: -log in -have an user account page -have the ability to change appearances of their account page -add content to their user page -have an graphical avatar -able to upload content(pictures, flash etc) -make posts and comments, respond to posts -a rating system -watching another user's page -receive updates on other user's recent work -purchase merchandise
I understand umbraco is open source so in theory anything it doesn't do, i can modify it to do it. But just wondering how much of this umbraco can do out of the box without changes, or with already available addons? I'm not too worried about the last item since that could always be added on with an entirely separate product if need be.
Also, is there a comparison of the free vs pro version? I noticed the pro version can be re-branded. Does this mean the free version is going to say umbraco and display an umbraco logo or something along those lines? If so, is there a screen shot of what that looks like? I dont mind having that as long as it's not too prominent.
as far as I know, the only limitation of Umbraco is your imagination. Umbraco is completely empty when you start. It's up to you to build it as you like. You can use anything within the .NET framework to use within Umbraco. Right now I'm building some kind of community environment which has almost all what you'ge mentioned, except the store.
Well you could say that of a blank web project in visual studio - it's only limited by my imagination (and coding skills) :)
I'm more interested in how much time umbraco could save me by whatever functionality is either already has or that can be added via a module/addon.
I already set up an install of umbraco to play with and installed the runaway and a few other items that it gave me a choice to install during setup. Right now though I'm not seeing a page for people to come and register themselves, nor a way to upload content to the site except logging on as the admin. I have not read any of the docs or support articles yet so it's possible i'm just missing something very simple. I haven't had time yet to review any of the help docs. haven't had time to look over all the available projects either. I just posted here first in case someone has already found these features and could save me some time from having to search for them.
@Ian - wouldn't say umbraco was a great fit for what you are trying to achieve - yes all is possibly within umbraco, some bits are easier than others, but realistically most of it will be manual work if umbraco is your chosen platform. i would look for more social networky type frameworks/products.... there is quite a nice little rails one called lovdbyless and commerical ones such like social engine.net (php) and dolphin (asp.net i think).
don't worry about the free vs pro issue - the branding refers only to the backend - your public website is built by your hands only.
Hmm, just took a quick look at the lovebyless site and it does seem geared more towards what i want. The downside to it is I have no experience with ruby on rails which means anything it doesn't do, is going to take me longer to implement since i'd first have to figure out the code. At least with umbraco i already know .net webforms so, in theory, it should be quicker for me to make changes.
I'll have to look at the lovebyless site in more detail and see exactly what it offers. It does sound pretty close to what i need right out of the box.
Thanks for the info.
P.S. is there a way to get email notifications when someone replies here? thanks again
