good question. We also use umb stats but I dont beleave it works with v4. However the preformance (as you know) is quite bad. I would advise you look at the google stats package..
Umbraco Stats was discontinued. I'm not sure if it would work with umbraco 4 from an upgraded site. My suspicion is that it wouldn't but I've never tried to to find out. As Alec mentions, google analytics dashboard package would be a good alternative.
There are two stats tables in the database that you can either keep (for historic data) or drop after uninstalling. In umbraco v3 there's also a web.config setting to enable stats that you'd want to disable before upgrading to umbraco 4.
Umbraco Stats
I am currently using Umbraco Stats with Umbraco version 3.0.2.
Will stats continue to work with the latest 4.x version?
Will it work with the lastest pro version?
I need another license for a different server, can it still be purchased?
If so, where do I go to do that?
Thanks,
Laurie
