My issue with having a specific node is that someone might delete that node in the CMS and you'd then have to recreate the node and update the umbracoSettings.config file again.
To my knowledge there currently is no way to simple just use a template.
However you can remove the delete options from your editors on that specific node so you're sure that the 404 node is never going to be deleted by any editor except yourself.
Thanks so much for your answer. May I ask how I can prevent users from deleting that specific node? I've found this article which seems useful but I'm wondering if there is a better way to do this? http://24days.in/umbraco/2013/editor-proofing-umbraco/
If you login to the Umbraco Backoffice with the user that you want to limit the access to delete a specific node, in your case the 404 node. Then right click on the node and you wll get the context menu. In this context menu choose Permissions, in there you will get a popup where you can change the permissions for a specific node in your case you should uncheck the delete option.
I have made some screenshots, to make it easier to understand what I mean.
Maybe you need to reload the nodes, and or out and back into the backoffice to get Umbraco updated with the new permissions.
So sorry for my late reply. Thanks very much for the screenshots. Much appreciated as it has helped a lot. It seems though that you can only prevent individual users from deleting that node. You can't apply permissions by role though, is that right? I have 26 individuals for example that are editors and instead of having to tick that box 26 times for the individuals it would be great if I could prevent all users with 'editor' as their type from deleting that specific node.
You can apply permissions by roles, so you don´t have to to do it for the 26 individuals users. If you go to the user section, and open the folder for the user types, and click on the editor role, there you will get the same picture as if you edited permissions for each user. Again I have made a screenshot.
Yeah can´t you do that by go to the user section, and open the folder for the user types, and click on the editor role. There you can edit the permissions for all people that have the an account of editor.
The screenshot show the permissions for the users that have the user type as editor.
Yes I can do that via the Users section - creating a new type of users and giving them editing permissions such as update and publish etc.
But I can't give a group of users access to a node e.g. if I go to the Content section and right click on a specific node and click Permissions this new type of user won't show up. It only shows individual names - not types of users like 'editors'.
Can you do a 404 by template rather than node?
Is there a better way to deliver a 404 page template instead of having a specif node in the umbracoSettings.config file as per this post? http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/install-and-setup/configuring-404-pages
