I have a client with a lot of websites (over 100), and they are looking to move a lot of them to Umbraco over time. My question is what is the best practice for putting sites into the same installation vs. using a new installation for each? Are there some criteria that defines a site as a candidate for it's own installation?
Some possible configurations I can think of are:
Group sites by business unit (4-5 installations total)
Group sites by similarity (only share an installation if many components are shared)
Group sites by functionality (sites that have their own user login get their own installation)
One of my concerns about using many separate Umbraco installations is that the admin accounts would all be different. Is there some way to share the Umbraco admin accounts across installations? That would make the decision easier, because I would rather push towards many separate installations for organization and no-clutter sake.
