Use for sections, what exactly is their use?

I am new to Umbraco and have a question about the use of sections.  I am trying to get an understanding of what sections are and how they can help me in my own website development.  So, an explanation of how sections fit into a website and what are the advantages to having custom sections.  From what I can find out it sounds like they are just another set of folders/subfolders and are basically used to store content where you might have a very large website with several sections to make the pieces more manageable from a deveoper's view and to control access at the user level.  Am I thinking on the correct lines or am I way off base with my thinking?

You also might use sections to manage any kind of data (umbraco core data in a different way from what they are presented by default, external product catalogs, crm data to handle available newsletters, etc). There are some nice blog posts on this around and I guess that umbraco.tv has something on that as well (but this is unconfirmed as we have not purchased pro yet).
