for what it's worth, it's not used in the 3.0.3 source either, which is going back some years. My guess would be it was related to having the the root node handled by the ITree in question unlike other sections where the root node is a container for subtrees. I'm still trying to work out why I sometimes get a root node and sometimes don't - I guess that field *used* to be involved in the past.
