just wondering if anyone could provide me with some advice on how to create a piece of backoffice functionality?

I am looking to create an area in the back office that displays a hit counter every time an advertisment is clicked on the website so that when the client logs into the backoffice they can view how many times each advertisment has been clicked.

What steps to I need to go through to create this piece of functionality?
