Custom tree for displaying to users

Hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this for me - wondering if it's possible to build a custom content tree that includes the content from the default tree but in a completely different structure.

Essentially, the default tree would still control the url structure, with the second tree built in such a way as to show users a single branch of content to which they have editing rights, even if said content is spread across the entire site. I could then set a start node per user so they see only the single branch. User permissions could then be set at the root and inherited. Edits could be made in either tree, and reflected in both. Administrators would see both trees, writers/editors only the branch of the second tree for which they have permissions.

Would it be possible? Or would the effort involved outweigh the potential benefits? I'm considering this for a site with ~120 users who have very granular access, with each node edited by ~5 users.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    cheers

    Nathan
