If i want to learn extend to Umbraco, where would i start?
Hello, I am looking to learn to extend Umbraco. That is i want to create say a related links item that had both internal and external link as a field and the ability to rename link when i has been added to the list. That kind of thing. Any help or advice greatly recieved. Also would like any advice in becoming more invovled in the Umbraco developer community and community as a whole.
In regard to your last part of the post you can be active in many ways.
1: You can answer posts here on our, helping others out or throw your 2 cents on a topic 2: You can contribute to the Umbraco core doing pull requests - You can also participate in the debates here https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/umbraco-dev 3: You can contribute to the new backoffice skinning currentl codenamed "Belle" by making pull requests - You can raise your voice here https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/umbraco-ux 4: You can blog about your Umbraco adventures when you discover something cool or build something cool 5: You can engage on twitter following the #umbraco hash-tag 6: You can create cool packages either by youself or in collaboration with other umbracians 7: Attend or host a local Umbraco meetup in your area 8: You can contribute to the documentation project on our http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/ 9: I probably forgot some more options but the above should be enough for you to choose from :D
In order to learn how to extend Umbraco you can buy access to umbraco.tv here http://umbraco.com/products/umbracotv and you can keep an eye on the documentation here http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Extending-Umbraco/ and if you google I'm sure you'll stumble across various blog posts on how to do cool Umbraco extensions - You can also get some inspiration from the 2012 advent calendar here www.24days.in/umbraco
Thanks Jan, this was a great help. Just started trying to help on here and post a bit all a bit new :). Will have a look at some of the links and see if i can learn to extend umbraco :). As a side thing, i tried to edit this post this morning and when i tried to save the message the page reponded with a xslt error. I tweeted @UmbracoProject with it, but was not sure if this was the right thing to do. Thanks, really a great help. Charlie.
Don't be sorry - it's only nice you want to contribute :)
I would simply sign up on the trello board and if the task is not created then create, assign to myself and set it to being in progress and then fork the project on github and go nuts and when ready create a pull request - remember that others can always add or modify to what you're writing anyway - and off course the more people who collaborate the better - but sometimes it's just easier to start out and see what happens.
How do i sign up to the board and create a new task, could not see any way of doing this only to subscribe?. I have forked and cloned the repo locally :).
Here https://trello.com/board/umbraco-4-documentation/4fdb02df8fc3ef067e809e95 there should be a sign up link in the top right corner of the page - must admit that it's been a while since I've had a look at the boards so I can't remember exactly how it works. But I bet you figure it out as soon as you've signed up :)
Hi Jan, sent a tweet out and it got picked up by Chriztian Steinmeier who added me. Cannot see the green sign up button, but this is probably because i am now a member?. Thanks :)

Hi Charles
You're welcome. Looking forward to your contributions on our in the future :)
Well, it's an embarrasing bug on the forum, which is a well known one that unfortunately is annoying many people (Understandable).
But fortunately the development of our was recently open sourced and this bug has actually been fixed. But the fix has not been deployed yet.
This is another opportunity to contribute btw - https://github.com/umbraco/OurUmbraco :) - Bugs on our can be reported here http://issues.umbraco.org/issues?q=%23OUR+

Thanks Jan. i will do my best :)

Thanks again Jan,
You have been alot of help :). Ah i have been to that board and could not see any sign up link :(.
Been looking at Trello and cannot see any way to sign up to the board :(
Hi Charles
Don't you see a green signup button in the top right corner here? https://trello.com/ - it should also appear on the previous link I posted.
Hope this helps.
