    Alternatives to Rich Text Editor

    Hi,

I've been using Umbraco for a while and one of the biggest problems I face (and also clients) is the flexibility of using images in the Rich Text Editor, as there aren't many extendable options you might expect such as pasting in images, drag-resizing. Some clients also have difficulty embedding youtube videos into the RTE and using the RTE styles I've previously created.

Are there any alternatives to using the default RTE? A couple of older forum posts mention using Microsoft Word and Windows Live Writer, are these still feasable methods with the latest Umbraco version(s)? If there isn't anything out there, does anyone know if there are plans to improve the UI and ease of the RTE?

    Thanks

    Hey Chris,

I would say it's about thinking differently, we hardly ever let our clients do anything with the RTE.

Instead we add properties to the DocType for videos for example, as well as images, tables etc.. Allowing clients loose on any Rich Text Editor is going to end in disaster.

The content editors job (IMHO) is to edit content, not resize image in the RTE, or placing videos where-ever they like within content, basically they should not making design decisions in the RTE.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Ckeditor looks awesome, especially if you could integrate Ckeditor's addons into the datatype.

I agree with your point, Rich; giving a client too much creative freedom always ends with a page looking dreadful and inconsistent but some would just prefer to update it themselves unfortunately!
