We are looking for a quality host with good support in the UK, something that can scale very quickly as the site membership could grow in 10,000's overnight.
I was hoping to use the Rackspace private cloud but this didn't really work how I expected plus their servers are in the US.
1&1 have a dedicated server where the processor / memory etc can be changed on the fly but would prefer a UK host.
You could always try Amazon Web Services, with servers in the EU (Ireland, I believe). I use a small vps from eukhost and have had no problems, but scaling may be an issue there.
We've used amazon web services for clients with no problems at all.
Yeh, their "cost calculator" doesn't help much either.
We found out that it was almost $100 a month just to keep the instance open for a site with very little traffic (in development), then you need to add on the cost of requests and bandwidth. Not a cheaper option for most circumstances.
Titan internet in the UK are good. They offer vds. You could alway store images in the cloud but keep the main app in normal hosting. I always like to have good hosting company behind to deal with thing like backup etc. It's good to have one else blame for that kind of stuff :)
just brain storming, but wouldn't it be cool if you could somehow keep the actually app using one database but distribute the actual content that resides in umbraco.config.
I have a VPS and a dedicated with EUKHost. The dedicated server has been great so far (8 months in). The VPS has had memory problems ocasionally, but generally speaking I'm very happy with it. Their support is 24x7x365, live chat, email, ticket and phone, which is pretty rare I'd say. They're very good value.
One of my clients has dedicated boxes with Rackspace, and the servers are based in London. Rackspace dedicated boxes can usually be held in either country. I've worked at several companies that use them, and they've all had positive things to say. Their support seems pretty decent and quick when I've had to deal with them, and their kit is pretty good too. They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for.
One of my other clients uses a company called UKFast for his load balanced server farm. They're cheaper than Rackspace and again seem pretty decent. I think their datacentre is based in Manchester. Their support is responsive and helpful, although not quite as fast as Rackspaces.
Both those companies have very comprehensive SLAs and backup provision.
Dedicated hosting in UK, any recommendations?

Obviously this is for an Umbraco site :)

Thanks Dan,
Didn't realise Amazon had Euro servers.
The pricing model is highly confusing but will need to read more I guess!

I can't get my head around AWS costing system at all which is not a good sign.
Anyone have a link to an clearer explanation than Amazon's?
@Anthony I've used Titan and really like them but not sure their Virtual Servers will scale enough for us.
http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#pricing
EC2 = servers instances
S3 = storage

Interesting.
thanks for the link, I've kinda read that but using that and the cost calculator it's pretty hard to advise my client what the monthly costs could be.
They would prefer to overpay a fixed cost I think, so at least they can budget for it.
After getting some more info from the client AWS is not going to work for us.
So does anyone else have any recommendations for dedicated hosting in the UK?
Must deal with automated back ups and have contactable support!
Currently getting a quote from Titan & Rackspace.
Thanks, Rich
I've had no problems with EUKhost VPS offerings, and have heard similar stories from others on this forum. Their dedicated prices are here -> http://www.eukhost.com/dedicated-server-hosting.php

Thanks guys, going to check EUKHost out now.

I would also recommend Titan Internet - we have co-located with them for about 7 - 8 years now.
