Graduation research - asking for your input!

    Hi fellow Umbracians!

First of all, I'm Dutch, so I can't promise there aren't any misspellings in my post ;-)

At the moment I'm doing my graduation research about Umbraco.
I took a dive into the world of Umbraco and am really thrilled about it.

I'm trying to let the community get to know me, by using Twitter a lot and create packages / help people.
Now I would like to ask you people about what you're missing in Umbraco or what isn't working for you (personally?).
What could be solved by creating a package?
Another question is: do you have any ideas for proper packages which aren't already existing?

In order for me to succesfully finish my graduation research, I really need input from the community (my teacher explicitly asked for this).

Thanks in advance, really appreciate the time taken to reply to my post :-)

    With kind regards,
Stefan Kip (kipusoep), InfoCaster - The Netherlands

    Hi Stefan,

Here you go, on top of my head.

    • Continiuous integration tools (for staging <> production deployment) for content as well as document types, xslt, template etc.
    • Easier adding of embed codes (Youtube, Slideshare etc.) in the HTML editor
    • Preview function in back-office
    • Front-end editing (canvas) that actually works :-)
    • UI Plugin structure
    • Newsletter functionallity (but that is being developed as we speak)
    Good luck with your graduation!

    Hi Stefan,

Like Gerben, I think it would be nice if something about canvas would be done (maybe enabling to update more than one field).

I think that enable access to writer in Umbraco should be avoided. In big projects, I think there is too many people that access the back-end.

In bocca al lupo per la tesi.

    Gerben and Eric,

    Thanks for the replies :)
I haven't got much experience with editing in canvas.

And it's an Umbraco core feature, don't know if I can edit something like that easily, but I'll investigate it if this issue gets enough support from the rest of the community.

Does anyone actually use Canvas? Seems kinda clumsy to me. CI tools as previously mentioned would be handy.

    Hi Stefan,

My biggest problem is deployment. Going from development to staging/live is taking ages. I want a tool (Maybe courier will do that in the future) that scans the difference between environments, then you can specify what needs to be done and by pressing a button the deployment is done for you. Just like Red-Gate SqlCompare/ SqlDataCompare.

    Cheers,

    Richard

AIght, deploying is our biggest problem too.

Keeping track of changes and stuff is really complicated I'm afraid, but I will look into it :) Thanks!

I'm also going to create a library with some functionality for the company I work for (InfoCaster) and release it to the community (also open source).

This library will contain functionalities like putting events automatically in year and month folders and archive events which ended in the past (in an archive folder) and alphabatically group and order documents under a given node and more.

What do you people think about this idea?
