How do i create a very basic sitemap.xml

I have read lots of articles but think i'm missing something, the site map tool seems to make a .aspx file, dosn't google/others lok for sitemap.xml?

is there a really simple way of doing this? (Not i can create the xsl to creat the site map, its how to create the .xml file i need help with.

Any suggestions?

Also, google doesnt care what the extension is, as long as a valid xml sitemap lives at the address. E.g. http://www.geckonewmedia.com/google-sitemap.aspx

Don't forget this one: http://our.umbraco.org/projects/cultiv-search-engine-sitemap

does not require tweaking your iis server (which is not feasable on a shared host environment)
