I am pretty new to Umbraco and was wondering if Examine was the best way to search a media folder. The search would return .pdf files from a folder of only .pdf files. All the examples of Examine that I find are being used to search through nodes and content, not media folders. Is Examine still the way to go for doing this? And if not, what would be the best technique for searching through a media folder?
Pretty sure (not 100%) the folders in the media section are only an interface device - the actual media items aren't stored in that structure. That said, you should be able use Examine to search by item name, just need to make sure you have the items indexed.

The search would take a string input and then find all the files that have that string in the name by the way
