Ah mystery solved. If media is uploaded from content using upload field then you dont see if in media section though it is created in media folder. When you upload media via media section as well as getting folders with media you get entry in database and then in media the tree is built from those entries.
View Media?
Sorry - this is a complete newbie question.
But via ftp I can see lots of numbered folders in my media directory with media inside.
But in the Media section in the admin of umbraco, I can't see them.
Is that normal, or have I set the permissions wrong again?

Is this a clean umbraco installation you are working with? Also did you upload those images from the media section?

No - its an install which I have moved across to the new server.
I don't do the content, but I am pretty sure the media is uploaded from the content nodes (we have tabs set up for image upload)
