Umbraco 4.6.1 Fails unless installed directly in wwwroot !
I don't know if this is an error or just a matter of information !
I tried installing Umbraco 4.6.1 using the webinstaller... i chose to install it into a subdirectory called 'Umbraco'
Lots of errors and unability to install demo-sites and stylesheets and at all use umbraco !!! TOTAL MESS !
So.. i tried installing it into WWWROOT directly ... now it works ! - but all other subfolders in my website (IIS default website) is now broken - due to URL-Rewrite !
SO ! - please inform about this in the installer ! (with LARGE LETTERS !)
The first error you ran into was probably because Umbraco can't run inside a subdirectory alone, it needs to be either in the root, or a virtual directory/application.
The second issue, you can exclude specific directories / URLs from Umbraco by editing the umbracoReservedUrls and umbracoReservedPaths keys in the web.config file. Also if you have a non-Umbraco virtual directory underneath you'd want to set Umbraco's web.config not to inherit in child applications, more info here.
Hope this helps, agree the installer could have warned you about the first issue :)
