I would say this looks like a permissions issue, however as you installed through the Web PI they should have been set correctly.

Maybe try one more (new) install and see if it happens again.

just tried that, and the same thing happened on a clean install. Here are some specs:

Windows 2008 R2

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Anything else I should check? Do you know what the permissions should be, so I can check?

Let me describe another procedure that failed:

• The application pool is ASP.NET 4 Integrated, I changed the identity to Network service and gave Full control on the folder to that account
• I downloaded the binaries from Codeplex, did one more install.

I would think that I would get more "fanatic support" from Umbraco developers. This is a problem that occurs on a new Windows 2008 Server with the recommended out-of-the-box installation procedure from Web Platform Installer, as well as the manual one. No one has encountered this error? Strange...

I agree that this is usually a permission issue, not really too sure what else to try past that.

But, one thing you might do is try an HTTP monitoring tool like Fiddler and see if you are getting any errors (500, etc) returned from any of the pages when you try to login.  If you do you can click to see the Raw Data and it might give a hint at where the problem is.

Also try checking the umbracoLog table for any errors that occur upon login.

Have to say I've never seen anyone have this issue using the WPI, this is why the responses are limited.

I would do as Tom suggests and then possibly try a manual install.

On a side note, do you have other .NET / SQL Server sites running successfully on your machine?

Thanks for both comments, sorry if I was a bit harsh before. In a strange twist, today I repeated exactly the same steps as yesterday and everything worked fine. So it was probably some temporary server problem, and since it has not happened to other users before it's not worth investigating further.

Now going deeper into Umbraco features...

Hate to ruin the jolly spirit around here, unfortunately the server just went under the same behaviour :(

For the last hours I have been playing around in the umbraco admin, created a couple of templates, everything worked fine. Suddenly, it stopped responding. While the frontend site works very fast (I managed to setup the masterpage), the umbraco admin makes about 3 minutes to load, and loads the screenshot I uploaded at my initial post. Server CPU and memory utilization are under 10%. Umbraco log and event viewer do not have any information.

Any ideas how to debug this would be welcomed.

Very strange, I'm at a loss, unless you're on a server where permissions can get changed without your knowledge (as in you've installed under something like Plesk)

No, it's a dedicated server and I have access. No such software has been installed.

When you talk about permissions, what kind of permissions? Is it something I can look at?

Any way I can PM you to send you server details to umbraco admin, if interested?

The list of Umbraco permissions are here http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/reference/files-and-folders/permissions but if you had the site working then this shouldn't be a problem.

Pretty basic, but did you try resetting IIS, or even rebooting the server (shouldn't be necessary but as a last resort)

I'm still stuck here. Have tried installing older versions (4.6, 4.5), still same behaviour.

Have you checked SQL Server is running and the connection string is correct?

Do you use the machine name or IP address in the string? 

Thanks for the efforts. The SQL Server is running and the connection string is correct. In fact, I am able to log into umbraco from some PCs, some times, and see the admin UI properly which should mean the installation finished successfully. But more often than not, I login, and then see the waiting screen attached in my original post. 

 

It is sooo weird. And it has happened in two completely different servers!
