Did you find a solutions to this issue? I'm having similar problems, but not after an upgrade, but after move from dev to production environment. Trying to figure out where to start looking for the root of the problem...
Did your tree ever load? I installed 4.0.2.1 and everything set up great. I login as Admin and the tree or Admin home page in the backend neverloads. I just see the thinking candy-stripe bar. I have tried multiple browsers and they all just continue to show the thinking candy-stripe bar. I am never able to see the home page. I see the create, about, logout buttons at the top, but nothing underneath.
Problems after updating to 4.0.2.1
Hi all,
I have a big problem after updating from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2.1.
The problem is that no trees are loaded in the backend in any section. I'm getting error 401 on request.
The site is on dedicated Win server 2003, database used is MSSQL 2000.
I'm thinking it has something to do with permissions, but i tried giving full access to "Everyone" and still it didn't work.
I hope somebody can help.

Did you overwrite the web.config file while updating?
No i didn't, should I?
Did you get the installer pop up wanting to run when put the new files on?
Yes and i followed all the steps in it
I just checked the umbraco/tree.aspx file and i keeps returning a single empty node "<tree/>", i think this sholud be somewhat different.

no still haven't solved it, i even try downgrading to 4.0.1 an it sitll doesn't work
OK, i solved it by moving all files to another folder which as it seems has same permission.
I still don't know what was the excat problem
