I'm a student, so i don't know a lot about domains, databases and servers, but i have a pretty good knowledge of a good variety of coding languages.
I have built webpages on Umbraco before, but i never 'installed' it or set up the database for it myself, so now that i need to do this on my FTP, i have no clue where to begin.
I have searched for a long time now for some solutions, but i was not able to get it working with either of them.
What i have done:
Downloaded a manual installation file of Umbraco, and put this onto my FTP, with Filezilla.
Now i don't know where to continue from this position, my guess is that this is a very basic question, and i'm sorry if this is not the correct place to ask this question, but none of the other sections seemed more relevant to my problem.
I when you have downloaded a manual installation file of Umbraco, and put this onto your FTP, with Filezilla, you should visit your domain, in the browser, When you do that. you should see the installer screen.
Like this:
When you come to the point where to choose database, you could choose a SQLCE database dependingon the size ofyour site. You can at anytimeconvertthe database from a SQLCE to a SQL Server if necessary,
On the next step you have to set an admin user up. On the next step you could choose to install a starter kit, but if you use the version 6, I donĀ“t know if the starter kits is working. But if you want a starter kit you can try this one.http://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits/creative-website-starter-%28cws%29. Or you could choose to start from scratch with a empty Umbraco installation.
If you are total new to Umbraco canrecommend to you to see these videos:
Is there anyway i can work on the new Umbraco site, without deleting my current site (while both are still on the ftp or something like that?). Or should i create the new webpage locally first, and figure out how i get that to work, and then later on move it to my FTP once it's ready to be displayed, or would that mess up the database functions etc. I guess it would just be easiest for me, as i'm new to all of this stuff to just delete my current site, remove all files, and replace it with the Umbraco files i downloaded.
If not, i'll back up all the stuff i have on it now, delete everything and try to put the Umbraco stuff at the root of my FTP and see if the Umbraco installation guide comes up.
Thanks a lot for your help!
Edit: Also about the installation stuff, i'm going to use a clean template, and install Boostrap onto Umbraco, and not use any of the standard ones, but thanks for the advice! :)
Youcan easily have more than one Umbraco installation running on your domain. However, this requiresonlythat you create an subdomain. So you could for exampe have one installation on www.yourdomain.com and another installation of umbraco on umbraco.yourdomain.com.
Yes you could so just delete your current site, remove all files, and replace it with the Umbraco files that you just had downloaded.
Ihope thiswas the answer toyour question orif not, just tell me, and I will tryassist you as much as Ican.

http://umbraco.com/help-and-support/video-tutorials/introduction-to-umbraco.aspx. If you see the moive about XSLT note that they show the old XML schema. The new XML schema was introduced in Umbraco version 4.5 and in forward versions. Here are some link to XSLT syntacs for the new XML Schema.
