Mulit-lingual Umbraco install behind load-balancer causes 404 on 2nd language

Using Umbraco 4.11.8
We are running a number of single-site Umbraco installs in a
load-balanced environment ‘without’ issue but our first shot at a multi-lingual
site leads to a 404 when we try to view the second language site.
The language setup is as follows:
English language site – https://ch.xyz.com
– nothing set on the node under Manage hostnames
French language site - https://ch.xyz.com/fr
- this domain is set under Manage hostnames
So in effect we have one domain and Umbraco is doing its
internal routing thing to render the French language site.
Is anyone aware of any issues with this sort of setup?
