You should follow the Umbraco 4 install guide NOT umbraco 3.

Hi Ahmed, I feel like I've seen this error and I resolved it by checking that the IIS website has it's ASP.NET v2 rather than v1.

    Regards,
    Barney

    Introduction

Get umbraco installed on your PC quickly!

Umbraco runs on any ASP.NET 2.0-capable web server and many databases. By using the Cassini web server and built-in VistaDB database, this guide provides the fastest and easiest installation process for local workstations. This guide is appropriate when evaluating umbraco as well as for local development activities.

Do not use this guide for server or network-accessible installations; the Cassini web server is only accessible from http://localhost. Please see the other installation guides for network-accessible installations using IIS.

    Recommended hardware for local installations

    • Windows XP or Vista (Vista is shown in this guide)
    • 1 GHz or faster processor
    • 512 KB or more memory
    • 50 MB or more available disk space
    • SVGA (1024 x 768) or higher monitor resolution
    • A modern web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 2+, Safari 3+)

    Installation overview

For most people, installation is a simple matter of copying the umbraco files to your hard drive, installing a small web server, and browsing to umbraco's web-based installation wizard.

Installation time is typically 10 to 30 minutes.

To ensure the smoothest installation process, we'll check that a few pieces of software are installed on your local computer before installing umbraco.

    Ensure .NET 2.0 is installed

Umbraco is an ASP.NET 2.0 web application and needs the .NET Framework installed on your computer. This is most likely already installed.

If you are running Windows Vista, you may skip this step.

Check to see if the .NET Framework is installed

    1. Open the Windows Explorer and look in the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework folder
    2. If you see a folder for v2.0.xxxxx or v3.0 or v3.5, the necessary .NET Framework is already installed.

Install the .NET Framework if not already installed

    1. If you do not have the .NET Framework installed, download and install the .NET Framework 2.0 from:

    Ensure ASP.NET AJAX is installed

Umbraco supports and uses ASP.NET AJAX. This may or may not already be installed.

Check to see if ASP.NET AJAX is installed

    1. Open the Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\assembly folder.
    2. Look for the System.Web.Extensions assembly.
    3. If you see the System.Web.Extensions (Version 1.0.*) assembly, ASP.NET AJAX is already installed.

Install ASP.NET AJAX if not already installed

    1. If you do not have ASP.NET AJAX installed, download and install ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 from:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca9d90fa-e8c9-42e3-aa19-08e2c027f5d6&displaylang=en

    5.

← Ensure ASP.NET AJAX is installed                                    Unzip Umbraco Files →

Ensure Windows Installer 3.1 is installed

The UltiDev Cassini web server utilizes the Windows Installer 3.1. Windows Installer is most likely already on your machine but may be an older version.

Check to see if Windows Installer 3.1 (or higher) is installed

    1. Open the Windows Explorer and look in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.
    2. If the MDI.DLL file is present, right-click on it and select the Properties menu.
    3. Check the version of the MSI.DLL file. It should be version 3.1 or higher.

Install Windows Installer 3.1 if not already installed

    1. If the MSI.DLL file is not present, or the version is not 3.1 or higher, download and install the Windows Installer 3.1 from:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

    Unzip Umbraco Files

Now that we've ensured we'll have a successful umbraco installation process we'll download umbraco 4 and unzip the files to our hard drive.

    1. Download the latest version of umbraco 4 from http://www.umbraco.org/v4
    2. Unzip the file to an empty folder on your local hard drive.
(We've used c:\inetpub\umbraco4 in this guide but you may use any folder you like.)

    Install UltiDev Cassini Web Server

We prefer to use the free Cassini web server rather than IIS for evaluations and development on local workstations because it is quickly installed, does not interfere with other web servers that might already be installed, and allows multiple websites to run simultaneously, even on Windows XP Home.

    1. Download the UltiDev Cassini web server from http://www.ultidev.com/Download
    2. Double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation process
    3. Launch the UltiDev Cassini Web Server Explorer (http://localhost:7756)

Configure a new web application for umbraco in Cassini

    1. Browse to the folder containing the unzipped umbraco files
    2. Select the default.aspx file
    3. Enter a Name for the site (we're going to call it umbraco4 in this guide)

    8.

← Install UltiDev Cassini Web Server

    Run Umbraco’s Web-based Installer

    1. Click the umbraco4 application link from the Cassini interface at http://localhost:7756
    2. Umbraco's installation wizard will lead you through the rest of the umbraco installation.
    3. After agreeing to the umbraco license, select the VistaDB database type.

    4. After the file permissions have been validated successfully, enter an administrator password.

    5. install Boost and a few Nitros.
Note: if you skip this step you can install it later from within the Developer > Packages section of umbraco.
    6. Congratulations, umbraco is installed!
    7. Click the Launch Umbraco button to go to the umbraco administration user interface.

← Install UltiDev Cassini Web Server

    1. Click the Generate button to create a unique ID
    2. Click the Save button.

    ← Unzip Umbraco Files                                    Run Umbraco’s Web-based Installer →
