Issue when upgrading v6 to v7

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading a website from v6 to v7.0.0 but I keep running into the same issue.

I am following the guide at Blix.co, I get to the end of the section that talks about editing my web.config file, attempt to load the site and I run into 500 - Internal Server Error.

The website is hosted on a VM so I have restored a previous checkpoint and tried a few times with the same result. I am using .net v4.5.

Can anyone give me advice as to where to start looking for the cause of the error?

    Hi Paul,

Perhaps the upgrade documentation can help you https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/installation/upgrading/general and there is also a guide if there are some specific things to do on a X version of Umbraco. https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Installation/Upgrading/version-specific

And last there is a full Umbraco 7 upgrade guide. https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/installation/upgrading/v7-upgrade

    Hope this can help you.

    /Dennis

    Hi Paul

Does the error contain any more details? Could it be a merge of the web.config that has gone wrong and added duplicate elements or something like that?

Make sure to read the official guide on going from 6 to 7 as well https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Installation/Upgrading/v7-upgrade

    /Jan

Thanks for your replies. There are no extra details in the error message, literally just:

    500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

The error message comes up instantaneously when I load any pages. There were quite substantial differences between the web.config files and so I suspect that the error lives in there.

Thanks for the links, I will restore the VM to v6 of Umbraco and follow that information, hopefully with better results!

I am in the process of upgrading again from the backup. It may (or may not) be worth mentioning that I did successfully upgrade from v4.11 to v6 yesterday.

Hi, I think the problem was that I had left too much in my web.config file when merging them together. I used to new version without any merges from my existing file other than copying the connection settings to its new home. I am now running into YSOD issues but I will start a new thread regarding these.
