We have a split install of Umbaco - the admin is on one server behind the firewall and front-end is on multiple front-end servers. For the front-end side, we would like to limit write access to only those folders that require it. Are there folders other than \data that require write access?
If your front end is not going to be doing any publishing or creating/updating templates, stylesheets and XSLT's then I don't think you will need write access to any folders. It would pay to test this hypothesis though ;)
