    Umbraco in shared hosting environment?

I'm an Umbraco newbie. Are there any concerns with using Umbraco, if my websites I will connect to it are "shared hosted"? My web host says they will install Umbraco on their server for me.

Or does using Umbraco require that I have full access to my server, and so isn't good when shared hosting?

Would it be hard later to migrate Umbraco from my shared host to my own web server, if I get my own server in the future?

Umbraco installs as a "regular" Web site. In other words, every site you deploy will require an Umbraco install for that particular site root. You most certainly can host on a shared environment, but be sure to check out the installation docs for guidlines and restrictins.

    Install docs: http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/install-and-setup

Umbraco is also, since recently, available in medium trust should you need that.

    Cheers!

What you said has me confused now about using Umbraco for multiple sites. How does what you are saying fit with this: http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/how-tos/running-multiple-websites-on-one-umbraco-installation

If you are going to be running multiple client (with no relationship to one another), then a separate install per client is would be my recommendation. Technically, yes, you can run any and all domains that you work with in one installation, but that would undoubtedly cause content caching issues, not to mention the maintenance nightmare of document types, templates and other resources. Running multiple sites on one installation refers more to multi-lingual sites or perhaps sub sites for a particular organization/intranet.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Nik
