I just upgraded from 7.2 to 7.4 and ended up with two Document Types folders. One of them corresponds to the 7.4 video I saw ("Create without template" etc), the other one gives me an error when trying to create something (see image).
Marking Brian's suggestion as the solution. I had WinDiff'd the two files, but I must have done something wrong since WinDiff said they were identical. They clearly weren't.

Hey, try to clear your browser cache and restart your applicatoin - with recycling Application pool. I had something similar and it helped.
Make sure you updated or replaced config\trees.config. Replacing the file and running iisreset solved the problem for me.
