Newbie: can't run install/default.aspx - get Server error in '/' application
I am trying to install Umbraco 4.03 at Softsys Hosting. I have successfully installed Umbraco on my localhost, i have built my site and I want to move it to production. So I wanted a clean install of Umbraco at my Softsys Hosting host. To do this I have been following the instructions at http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/install-and-setup/installing-umbraco-4-on-reliablesitenet-(or-similar-hosts) but I am stuck at the last step. How do I get the installer to work from this point?
Second, I believe SoftSys supports installing umbraco. You may try contacting their support team and asking. It may be that they need to do something for you.
Thanks Tonny and Casey for taking the time to reply. Here's the full solution to my issue, in the hope that it helps someone else.
What I needed to do was indeed enable error messages as per Casey's message above. After that I tried the install/default.aspx page again and this time I could see the actual error message saying that it couldn't find 3 dll files. I contacted support at Softsys and they said that I needed to install the 'AJAX 1.0.61025.0' version dll files to the 'bin' folder in my home directory . To do this I followed this link to get the AJAX download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca9d90fa-e8c9-42e3-aa19-08e2c027f5d6&displaylang=en then I installed it on my own PC and did a search of C:/windows to find these 3 files System.Design.dll, System.Web.Extensions.Design.dll, System.Web.Extensions.dll. I FTP'ed these 3 files up to my www.mydomain/wwwroot/bin directory and retried running the install/default.aspx page and it worked!!
Thanks everyone for your help, and I would totally recommend Softsys Hosting they are very quick and helpful.

I tried to navigate to the installing page using my web site pointer/instant alias url http://playmergency.com.serv8.temphostspace.com/install/default.aspx and also http://playmergency.com/install/default.aspx ; as my DotNetPanel says DNS is enabled for my domain playmergency.com, but I get the Server Error in '/' Application message in both cases.
Can anyone point me in the right direction...been bashing away at this and the wiki and forum for a couple of days now.
First, enable error messages. Change "RemoteOnly" to "Off" in the error mode settings of the web.config.
My first guess is you need the web.config for integrated pipelines for 2008. In the cp, you may be able to change it to classic mode too.

I also use SoftSys for hosting my umbraco sites. I just contacted SoftSys support and they helped getting my stuff up and running. :-)
