It would appear to be a permissions problem, but I have not been able to determine the cause. Is there anyone who can shed light on this issue and offer a resolution?
js is right, but make sure to check what identity the application pool is running under (may or may not be network service in your case). It's that identity that needs full control on the umbraco installation folder.
Since my response to jc, I have reinstalled Umbraco, following the information in the first link, which jc kindly supplied. All seems to have gone well with the installation, and I have ensured the 'NETWORK SERVICE' has full control on all of the Umbraco folders. Additioanlly, I have checked the 'DefaultAppPool' properties, Identity tab, which confirmed that 'NETWORK SERVICE' is the predefined security account.
Unfortunately, I still received the same error, so gave the 'NETWORK SERVICE' account full control of the folder 'cc62f8d6', which made no difference.

Thanking you in advance.

You'll need to configure the Network Service account with Full control. Check out these resources:
http://umbraco.org/documentation/books/install-umbraco-4-on-windows-vista/configure-iis-website
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff647402.aspx
Thank you for your reply but I had already carried out that step, as per the installation instructions.
Regards,
Simon
Simon,
js is right, but make sure to check what identity the application pool is running under (may or may not be network service in your case). It's that identity that needs full control on the umbraco installation folder.
Hope this helps.
