    Microsoft Web Platform Installation fails

    i am following this guide.

    http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/how-tos/a-complete-newbie%27s-guide-to-umbraco

nothing is mentioned about what to call the name of the application in the mwp installation wizard.  this is a required step.  whatever you call the application this becomes the name of the subfolder created under wwwroot

after no success, I read you have to install in the root, i hope they did not mean the umbraco folder structure is not directly in the root of wwwroot,  because if this is the case then this is impossible using the mwp.  Which the newbie guide says is a wiz.  So I tried a second install using mwp installer and gave it an application name of umbraco.  no difference.

    I watch the video http://umbraco.org/documentation/videos/getting-started/installing-umbraco

and it magically assumes the install page.

so I copy the folder structure from my first install directly into the wwwroot folder, which strikes me as wrong since I obviously want to host more than one website.  as I copy the folders over it then wants to overwrite the umbraco directory that was created from my second install attempt,  so i delete that folder and trying every combination of path using local host that could make sense.

Even this mysterious path from the beginning of the video tutorial.

    http://localhost/install/default.aspx?redir=true&url=/default.aspx

getting this url requires better eye sight than what I have left.

the windows platform installer says it did its job.  I see the websites in iis but no install/default.aspx works

if I put a test.txt in the install folder nothing comes up either.

Umbraco access to vs user controls is enough to make this worth a good try and it all sounds great, but like the guy in the newbie article listed above said, "I had more than a few issues trying to get it installed due to not being able to find the right answers about a year or so ago (Or was it I was just being impatient) – And I’ll hold  my hands up, I threw my toys out the pram and just gave up"

so he sends Microsoft Web Platform to the rescue with no mention about the application name or how to get to the install page.

So I quit and am going to bed.
