Could you give us some more information on what becomes ""? Does the content in the editor disappear or whats going on?

I think the only way to allow thoses character is to disable TidyEditorContent in config/umbracoSettings.config
Edit: I've also created a package that should fix it as well (without disabling TidyEditorContent).

Give it a shot. Doug's approach sound like a good idea too.
That's the package I just created :). Instead of totaly disabling TidyNet I've compiled a new TidyNet dll that doesn't convert variations of single quotes, double quotes and dashes.
Ahh, didn't notice that you where the author of the package Doug :) Well, then you must for sure know if the package solves this problem :D
