Can this Blog be added as a module/plugin or is it an entire site template? I've got a site in development but need a blog area so wondered if this would do the trick and not replace my current document types and templates once installed?
You can just install this package and a blog node with some sub nodes will be added to your current umbraco installation. All the required templates, documenttypes, etc will be created automatically if you install the blog. However if you're using 4.5 not everything might work out of the box. If not everything works try the latest changeset: http://blog4umbraco.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list/changesets.
