Cannot insert image via TinyMCE in Safari/Umbraco 4.7
We've recently clean installed an Umbraco 4.70 site and have encountered a problem in Safari when inserting an image in TinyMCE (Safari for Windows 5.03 (7533.19.4) and the latest Safari version for MAC).
Instead of the image appearing the following text is entered in its place 'mce_marker' and the insert image window remains open instead of closing on insert as normal. Firefox 3.6, IE 7,8, 9 do not exhibit the issue and it does not occur on our 4.6 Umbraco sites using Safari.
We've posted this as a possible 4.7 bug in Codeplex but was wondering whether anyone else had encountered the issue and can suggest a quick fix - our client is a 'little' sensitive (read that as intransient) to our short term suggestion that he download and use Firefox instead...
Hi Jonas. Unfortunaetly no solution as of yet, we have another Safari client coming up so we'll dig a bit deeper when we in pre-development. If we find a fix will post it here.
Has anyone else encountered this and how to get around it?
I'm having a similar problem. Can't paste text into a TinyMCE editor. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes the text "mce_marker" appears in the editor window.
Using Umbraco 4.7.0 (Assembly version: 1.0.4090.38017) Safari 5.0.5 (6533.21.1) Mac OS X 10.6.7 default Richtext Editor control (TinyMCE 3)
I have the same problem on Umbraco 4.7 and a whole slew of windows clients when trying to just insert an image:
IE7/8/9, Firefox 4.01.5.0, RockMelt .9.58, and Chrome 12.0.742. All that gets placed is an image tag like: <img id="__mce_tmp" alt="" />
When you click/select an image in the editor, the preview displays correctly - you see the image you are trying to insert, but it just doesn't get posted to the form/editor correctly.
Also, maybe it's just my expectations, but, after you select the image and click insert, the dialog box does not disappear either.
Is there any update to this? I have a very frustrated client who isn't HTML capable trying to use this editor.
To add another wrinkle to this thread, I have also run into an issue that you can't insert a macro into the editor unless you are using FireFox. Chrome, Safari(PC), and IE 9 all fail to allow a macro into the editor. I don't know if these are related or not, but it couldn't hurt to check.
Upgraded to 4.7.1 and this problem still persists. One of my clients is Mac only so obviously it will be frustrating for them. I'm going to have them use Firefox in the meantime.
I was going to upgrade TinyMCE to the latest (3.4.6) but I saw Umbraco's implementation notes in the TinyMCE folder, and that looks too complicated to try and upgrade.
Will a TinyMCE-upgraded fix be available in a possible 4.7.2 or the upcoming 5.0?
Oh, something else I noticed that's probably not related: When I set the default CSS in the TinyMCE editor to be white text on a dark brown background (in order to match the style on the actual pages), in all non-Webkit browsers, the flashing cursor is white as expected, but in Safari and Chrome it's still black and hard to see against the brown background (still types white characters though). Don't know if that's a Webkit or a TinyMCE issue.
Had this problem too with a customer, felt awkward to tell her that she has to download another browser for her mac. Any workaround known, or is a fix coming?
I agree with Henri that it is a shame that we have to tell mac users they are not supported. I know they can use Chrome/Firefox, but the users like using their 'mac browser'.
I was goin got try upgrading Tiny_MCE myself, but it is quite complex sounding, and I am afraid of screwing it up.
Aaaaand even with the 4.7.1.1 maintenance release, this problem still has not been resolved. I'm hoping for a fix before support is eventually discontinued...
I also don't know if the new v5.0 has fixed this issue, but I'm having trouble getting the RTM build to install and I'm not yet familiar enough with MVC to start using it for production.
Hmm... I'm suffering with this with a new client too. It happens on both Safari and Firefox on their Mac - images just won't load in the TinyMCE editor. Loathed to ask them to download a third browser to try this on. I've not investigated further as to what the cause is, but will do so and feed back if I find anything useful.
We've been having problems with inserting videos through macros in TinyMCE. Just installed 4.7.2. Problem doesn't appear to be resolved. In our case the only browsers that seem to handle insrting a video in this manner on a PC are firefox and chrome. IE 9 and Safari for PC have issues. Safari throws the "mce_marker" error as well. Looks like there will be a version 4.8, which an "overhaul" of TinyMCE is promised: http://umbraco.codeplex.com/releases/view/86586. If any others have work-arounds or resolutions in the interim, I'd be very happy to hear.
Not as far as I know, unless you want to install a custom TinyMCE. But as part of the announcement of the Unbraco 5 not bering developed further it was mentioned that the 4.X branch would receive the most up to date TinyMCE. I think this may be with the 4.8 release, but am not sure.
Yeah, it was kinda rhetorical question. I'm pretty sure they'll upgrade TinyMCE in 4.8 (http://umbraco.codeplex.com/releases/view/86586) but i haven't seen anything about a time span for that release.
Apprently this bug has been here for some time, and all of us who can not do a easy upgrade to the newest version of umbraco, where the bug "should" be fixed (not 100% sure that it is fixed).

Hi Robert, we also encountered this. No solution. Did you find any?

Same problem here... And same setup as Chester!
Cant paste... cant mark anything... and cant delete!

It looks like there is an error in TinyMCE, and that a fix is due shortly.

There may be a JavaScript fix that I am testing at the moment.

You must create table and input simple text. after that you can browse image from your media. and remove simple text and published.

Shameless bump.

It looks like they're proposing to have this fixed in a 4.7.2 release but I don't know how definite that is... http://umbraco.codeplex.com/workitem/30194
I also don't know if the new v5.0 has fixed this issue, but I'm having trouble getting the RTM build to install and I'm not yet familiar enough with MVC to start using it for production.
I assume there is no movement on this? I have a client who has run into the same issue.

I aso have this problem.

It was very embarrassing explaining this to my customer. Specially after the whole Umbraco5 thing. This thread is a half year old and still no fix?

V 4.8 is suppoed to be released as a beta this month with release next quarter.
V 4.8 has the most up to date version of TinyMCE.
This is from the CodeGarden KeyNote speach - from the video.
Thanks! This needs a quick fix.
Apprently this bug has been here for some time, and all of us who can not do a easy upgrade to the newest version of umbraco, where the bug "should" be fixed (not 100% sure that it is fixed).
So here is 2 solutions that can fix the problem, one is a drop-in solution, that does not require upgrade of umbraco, see: http://allan-laustsen.blogspot.dk/2012/11/umbraco-4711-using-safari-insert-image.html

I've got a client using a Mac and Umbraco 6.1.6 complaing about 'mce_marker' being inserted randomly as they type in the RichText field.
Hi @Matt Taylor
Did you try removing the contents of the files descriped in the blog post I did ?

Hello Allan,
Yes I looked for those files and discovered that they don't seem to exist in v6.1?
