I have an issue where preview is not working in 4.7.1: if a change is made to an existing, published node, then saved, the changes are not shown in preview mode. Also, if a new node is created an not published, on trying to preview it, a 404 error occurs.
Maybe it's related to permissions perhaps? What happens if you give full permissions to network service and iusr? (If you have not done this already?).
I have 3 sites that are in development on 4.7.1 right now. Preview feature is sorely missed by the new editors (my clients...). Can someone please verify which version of the nightlies contains a fix for the preview bug? Of would you recommend waiting for 4.7.1.1? Sounds like that might be eminent. I've not done an upgrade to any of our Umbraco sites yet, are there instructions on how to deploy an upgrade? Overall Umbraco just keeps getting better, thanks for all your hard work.
I think Neils is working on fixing the macro caching bug before releasing 4.7.1.1, but it sounds like he's close.
In the meantime, if you're desperate, you can simply download a nightly build with the fix - I think .449 or .450 should have it. All you should need to do is replace the umbraco.dll file. (Of course, backup first so you can easily restore it if any problems).
@andrew: I know it sucks - in retrospec we should have released the bits we had working and then made another release with the heavy-load-on-macro-caching bug (which has proven *really* hard to solve). We're very close though, but if we don't nail it we'll release 4.7.1.1 anyway this week which includes the preview fix.
Just upgraded from 4.7 to 4.7.1 on a live site and within an hour my client has noticed the preview feature is broken. Can someome confirm exactly which nightly build will have this fix in place?
Tom, glad to hear the the fix is available in .449.
Having not deployed a nightly build ever could you verify the steps for me? If I'm already running 4.7.1 do I just need to back up the current umbraco.dll and replace it with the umbraco.dll from the .449 nightly build? Is it that simple?
I downloaded the .449 build this morning. Backedup my umbraco.dll and dragged the umbraco.dll out of the build zip file and into my site where preview was not working. Works like a charm now. Easy as pie. Appreciate your help.
Preview is fixed in the latest nightly and we only have one b/w compatibility with razor issue left before 4.7.1.1 comes out. Expect last beta tomorrow, Friday and release Tues/Wed next week!
This is for a node that has been saved, and even saved and published but has since had changes that the editor wants to see in preview mode. Previewing requires a save and then preview in order to see any changes. From a technical standpoint I can understand this requirement, but I'm quite sure that way back in v3 this two step wasn't required.
And more importantly, clients tend to think it should just preview what you've just entered in ;-)
seems reasonable to me that you should have to 'save' before changes are reflected in the preview.
i can also understand how a client would expect the preview to just "work" when they click it. But it might just be a case of re-education for them here..
My client flagged the error prior to the 4.7.1.1 released fix and luckily it was the next day the patch was released! (Thanks guys!) Now she's come back to me with the same error a month later, but there's not been any code work done on the site since the patch was applied?
I've checked the "About" button and that is reporting "umbraco v 4.7.1.1 (Assembly version: 1.0.4393.24044)" and the web.config reports: "<add key="umbracoConfigurationStatus" value="4.7.1.1" />"
Also, I've checked the development site that I tested the patch on before applying it originally, and there's not been any changes to that since, and the preview WORKS!!!!
Can anyone tell me what file is needed for the preview to work so I could maybe copy that from my server to their's to see? Can anyone help deduce why the preview has broken again? Please let me know if there's any further information that might shed light on this?!?!?!
I am running umbraco v 4.7.0 (Assembly version: 1.0.4090.21631) and seem to be experiencing the preview bug, well at least when i click preview the client is getting a blank white screen or a page not found error.
Be sure to understand that if the parent of the node you're trying to preview is NOT published either, the preview will NOT work no matter if you have the patch installed or not. This is due to the fact that the child node cannot get the data needed to "wrap" itself in by default.
Does any know if this should be working 4.7.1.1 please as I have a site I am playing with and it doesn't seem to work still? I am on umbraco v 4.7.1.1 (Assembly version: 1.0.4393.24044)
If I create a new page and save then preview I get a 404 error.
Nothing changes if you also edit an existing page and save then preview. i know this was broken before, but I thought it had been mended?
Adam, it works in 4.7.1.1 - we've confirmed on multiple sites. But as you can see in discussions above, the parent must be published as well so perhaps that's your issue?
It is definitely fixed in 4.7.1.1, so if you think it's an upgrade, I would verify that everything got properly upgraded. It's possible that you've got something missing. I usually upgrade using Beyond Compare (WinMerge, etc. fine too) to make sure nothing gets missed. I can't recall right now if the 4.7.1 to 4.7.1.1 release upgraded anything but DLLs, but most likely it did.
Actually, just done a bit more testing, and the bug is there if you are logged in as an editor or a writer.
If I am logged in as the Admin user and add a page preview works fine.
If I add a page as a writer or an editor, in the same place in the tree, preview does not work and new pages just create a 404 error. Admin works fine for all edits and new pages.
Can anyone else test this and see if you get the same issue with users who don't have admin rights?
Additiional:
If I add a page as an admin user and save it (not publish), then login as an editor and try and preview it, then I get the same error as well, so it looks like a permisson problem with users with lower access rights?
Not good news, I've just tried to replicate your steps on a site which was 4.7.1 - but which we upgraded to 4.7.1.1 in order to fix the "publish at" bug.
I created a new node, and without publishing, or saving, managed to preview the node, I created an Editor account and did the same thing, creating a new page, then immediatly previewing it, without saving and without publishing.
Perhaps it's worth re-downloading 4.7.1.1 and upgrading all the files again, in case somethign was missed?

Is this a known issue with this version?
Don't know why this happens, but you could try this package: http://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/cogworks-super-preview.
Jeroen
Hi Jeroen, I've already tried using Super Preview - same thing happens.
Hi Euan
Maybe it's related to permissions perhaps? What happens if you give full permissions to network service and iusr? (If you have not done this already?).
/Jan
Hi Jan,
Already have that full permissions to IUSR and the App Pool identity (IIS 7.5).
Cheers,
Euan
I got the same problem
It's a known issue and a (big) bug. It's fixed in the nightlies and also in the 4.7.1.1 that *will* come mid next week the latest. There I said it!
Hi Niels! Do you have any news about date of new release?
I have 3 sites that are in development on 4.7.1 right now. Preview feature is sorely missed by the new editors (my clients...). Hi Niels, when it plans to release the next version?
We want to correct this error as soon as possible :)
thnks!
Is there a patch that fixes this bug yet?
I demoed a new website for a client two days ago, and preview wasn't working. Was kind of embarrassing.
release date pls!
>it's a known issue and a (big) bug. It's fixed in the nightlies and also in the 4.7.1.1 that *will* come mid next week the latest. There I said it!

We're learning every week.
thanks Neils! i appreciate that something like caching issues could be hard to solve.
Arghhh....
Just upgraded from 4.7 to 4.7.1 on a live site and within an hour my client has noticed the preview feature is broken. Can someome confirm exactly which nightly build will have this fix in place?
Hi Michael,
I can confirm .449 has the fix. Of course make sure you backup first, and wait for the release if you can :)
-Tom
Tom, glad to hear the the fix is available in .449.

Yes, that should be all you need to do in this case. Best to test on a non-production environment first though if you're not familiar with this :)
I downloaded the .449 build this morning. Backedup my umbraco.dll and dragged the umbraco.dll out of the build zip file and into my site where preview was not working. Works like a charm now. Easy as pie. Appreciate your help.
If the preview is fixed in 4.7.1.1 would it also solve this bug? http://umbraco.codeplex.com/workitem/30631
The translation xml returns empty xml.
Jeroen
hi,
how is the final 4.7.1.1 release coming along?
Preview 'almost' fixed in build 449. Still doesnt work for new pages until published.
However - i just uploaded build 467 and this also works great now.
:)
Hi Niels.
We are launching a new site early January. Will there be a patch fixing the preview, or will we have to upgrade from nightly?
Hey guys beware!
I just had to roll back this fix as it broke macro scripting site wide.
I had copied all the umbraco dlls so rolled them all back to the 4.7.1 build and working again now - without preview!
Could that be related to this topic? http://our.umbraco.org/forum/ourumb-dev-forum/bugs/18381-All-xslt-files-broken-after-upgrading-to-47
I've also had some problems, but it was after upgrading to 4.7.
Jeroen
Jeroen, the problem exists in a clean 4.7.1 as well.
I can't see this issue in the bug tracker on codeplex, am I missing something?
Also, any updates as to when we might see a working preview again, or is all the effort going into v5 development at the moment?
This is a pretty critical issue for many, although I'm surprised there's not a lot of shouting about it here.
Thanks,
Ed.
Preview is fixed in the latest nightly and we only have one b/w compatibility with razor issue left before 4.7.1.1 comes out. Expect last beta tomorrow, Friday and release Tues/Wed next week!
4.7.1.1 is out :) http://umbraco.codeplex.com/releases/view/73692
Jeroen
Deployed 4.7.1.1 and unfortunately, the preview requires the node to be saved first (not save and publish at least). Is anyone else experiencing this?
I wouldn't expect preview to work for a node that hasn't even been saved.
Preview should show saved (but not necessary published) content, I suppose.
- Dennis
This is for a node that has been saved, and even saved and published but has since had changes that the editor wants to see in preview mode. @Ted: You've always had to save to preview.
Niels: thanks so much for chiming in with the authoritative answer on that one!
(though I must admit that I agree that it would be logic if it worked by just clicking preview. Great input!)
Help!
My client flagged the error prior to the 4.7.1.1 released fix and luckily it was the next day the patch was released! (Thanks guys!)

Hey All,
I am running umbraco v 4.7.0 (Assembly version: 1.0.4090.21631) and seem to be experiencing the preview bug, well at least when i click preview the client is getting a blank white screen or a page not found error.
Do i need to upgrade?
S
Stephen,
Yes the bug was fixed in v 4.7.1 - its easy enough to upgrade, just grab the latest files (4.7.1.1) from codeplex and follwo instructions.
http://umbraco.codeplex.com/releases/view/73692
Kenny
ps. you need to save the node first - don't need to publish as you would expect.
K
Stephen, and anyone else checking this thread,
Be sure to understand that if the parent of the node you're trying to preview is NOT published either, the preview will NOT work no matter if you have the patch installed or not. This is due to the fact that the child node cannot get the data needed to "wrap" itself in by default.
This is a known bug ( http://umbraco.codeplex.com/workitem/29952 ) please vote it up if you think the core should change this!
Sincerely,
Jon
Yeah I understand that, parent node is published as is the node I'm trying to preview! I'll go and do the patch.
Thanks for posts..

Hi Ted
Thanks for the reply, the parent is already published and always was.
Any more thoughts?
cheers
Is it a brand new site or an upgrade?
Ted
I think it is an upgrade...what patch would fix it so I can check to see if I have it?

ah ok
well just me then :)
Will try again and see if I can determine where the problem is...
Cheers
are you getting the page not found error
are you getting the page not found error
hello, me again...
I have found the problem. It is not related to the Umbraco preview. It is related to the wonderful CogSuperPreiview package (shameless plug no 1- http://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/cogworks-super-preview ) which we had installed.
I have uninstalled the superpreview package and all is working now as it should be.
Obvioulsy something in 4.7.1.1. has broken our package. We will release a fix and upload shortly.
Cheers for now...
Hello,
when i create a page and hit the preview button beofre publishing it, i got an error that says"
The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
" can anyone please hello me out
I'd recommend in future making a different thread for your issue as it is not entirely related.
You need to save (not necessarily save and publish) prior to hitting the preview.
Ted
is working on a reply...
