Log in to umbraco 5 admin section broken

I have an Umbraco 5.1 installation where a user logged in as the admin account has tried to use the rollback feature on a content node. He saw an error message saying that his login did not have permission to perform the action, and was then logged out. It is now no longer possible to log into the Umbraco back end. The correct credentials only yield a "incorrect username/password" error message.

Looking in the database (which is one of the most terrfiyingly overnormalised schemata I've ever come across), there appear to now be many copies of the attributes for username and password etc, though only one user was ever created. I assume this is somehow related to the problem, though it is very difficult to tell what is actually happening in there due to the normalisation.

As the database is in SQL Azure we have no backups to restore to, so I really need some way to fix this. Any ideas what I need to do?
