Page/Browers Title Not Being Index By Google Correctly

So as I'm sure everyone is aware site SEO is important, and one of the key elements in SEO is the page titles.

When my web designer set us up on Umbraco I requested that we be able to adjust the Page Titles so we could better SEo each page of the site but for some reason Google doesn't index them correctly.

    Take for example this page:

    http://www.forkforce.com.au/forklift-hire.aspx

The page title in the browser as well as in the source code when you view the page is:

<title>QLD Forklift Hire Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba Forklift Rental</title>

Yet if you look the page up in Google the Page Title is the default:

Forklift Hire - Fork Force Australia

    http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=http:%2F%2Fwww.forkforce.com.au%2Fforklift-hire.aspx&oq=http:%2F%2Fwww.forkforce.com.au%2Fforklift-hire.aspx&gs_l=hp.12...1569.9804.0.10684.2.2.0.0.0.0.298.298.2-1.1.0.les%3B..0.1...1c.1.5KY3XtSU3wg&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.1354675689,d.dGY&fp=5b89aa94fc605fbd&bpcl=39650382&biw=1680&bih=902

This obviously isn't ideal and it's very important that we get Google to index the correct SEO optimised page title.

So does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong?

Just so you know "Forklift Hire" is the name of the page in the Umbraco system...

If it's in the <title> tag on the page, then it's likely Google will use that in the SERPs.
(at the end of the day, the Title and Meta Description are only suggestions for Google to use, although when it comes to Title in 99%+ cases, Google will use what you tell it to).

If you look at the cached version of that page in  Google, you can see that the last time Google looked at your page was 1st December.
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:q0U6lhuEP1UJ:www.forkforce.com.au/forklift-hire.aspx+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

When did you change Title tag value on that page? I think it's likely that it was after 1st December.

If you want Google to 'pick up changes' faster on your website, you need to make sure that you're constantly updating and adding content.
    Why?
How often Google checks your sites pages depends on how often it notices that you've made a change or update.

So, if Google checks your site twice this week and no content has changed, it won't check for longer - say 2 weeks.
After 2 weeks, if it see's no other content has changed since it last looked. Well...looks like you don't update it very often, so it might check every 4 weeks.
If there's no new content after 4 more weeks, it might check back in a few months....

As they say. Content Is King.

    ==============

One some other points, you're using the Meta Description tag incorrectly.

<meta name="description" content="forklift, hire, rental, forklifts, for, rent, brisbane, gold coast, sunshine coast, toowoomba, sydney, melbourne, walkie stacker, rough terrain, electric, diesel, lpg." />

This should be a short description about the page, not a list of keywords.
This is what you see in search results.
    http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/meta-description ;

Actually, looking at your Meta Keywords - it seems that you've got the Description and Keywords mixed up!

<meta name="keywords" content="Fork Force specialise in Brisbane forklift hire but also offers its forklift hire services into Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba. Fork Force also has a range of forklift rental options when it comes to fuel types including, electric, diesel, lpg, and more and also has rough terrain forklifts and walkie stacker forklifts for hire in its hire fleet." />

On those points - using the keywords field is a bit 'old hat', it doesn't really have any effect on SEO at all (in fact, Bing use it as a spam flag).
It's very easy to "overcook" and keyword stuff/spam your meta fields..

I highly highly recommend that you read (and keep up with) SEOMoz - starting with all the links on the right side of this page: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo

Thanks Drew I appreciate the response.

I change the title tag of the page a couple of days ago, but what concerns me is that if you look at the page source of the cached version of the site you point out the page title is:

Forklift Hire Brisbane | Gold Coast | Electric Forklift Rental

Which is the title that is would have been on December 1st (it hasn't been changed in months) however in Google the page title is still coming up as if the page title is this:

Forklift Hire - Fork Force Australia

I only notice the problem when I went to change the title a couple of day ago to what it is meant to be currently:

QLD Forklift Hire Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba Forklift Rental

Now can you see what I'm getting it?

Google is using the default set by Umbraco which is "Page Name - Site Name" which in our case is "Forklift Hire  Fork Force Australia"...

    Why is this happening?

As for the keyword and description issues, I hear what you are saying, and thank you for notifying us. I will start another thread about the issue, because I would like this thread to be focussed on my main concern at the moment, which is that the titles aren't being indexed correctly.

Google and any other search engine can only use the information you've had on your website. It can't "get into" Umbraco to use any other value, other than is represented in the HTML.

This means that it's highly likely that at some stage in the past month or so, you've had "ForkliftHire-ForkForceAustralia" as your Title value.

Google may have chosen not to use your new title, as it may not think it's relevant - which may be due to the keyword stuffing it looks like you've been doing.

Give it time, it will update (obviously, if you're adding fresh content to your site all the time, then it will be quite soon - if you only update your site once a month...then it might be a few weeks/months).

    Cheers,
    -Drew

OK I think I have fixed the problem.

The problem was that for the forklift-sales.aspx and forklift-hire.aspx pages they acting both as content pages and product category pages, so whilst I had the page titles set in the content page properties I didn't have the page titles set in the category page properties.

Hopefully Google will reindex the pages in the coming days.

    Thanks Drew for the help.
