I've come across an issue with Umbraco 7.1.8 and the Media folder. When using the Bulk Upload option to create a gallery on my website the uploaded images would only work at random (I was using the TypedMedia function to call the folder).
To get the photos to show on my website I either had to rebuild the examine indexes (which is unrealistic in production) or go through each uploaded file in the media folder and re-save them.
If I created the items individually by right clicking on the folder and selecting Create I had no issues.

That indeed sounds like a bug - Would you mind posting it on the issue tracker? That way it can be handled by HQ/Community etc.
