It might be an idea to introduce the karma system and the ways of rewarding posters to newcomers. It could be done with some introtexts or reminders telling "you've read xx post without dealing out any karma". Well maybe not exactly like that but ...
I think there should also be some more openness about how you can earn karma... I just gave Jesper an accepted answer and it gave a score of a hundred, but his karma points didn't go up with a 100, how does that work?
This system was modelled after Stack Overflow and I think the badges there really help people having the correct behaviour.
I agree that openness is needed. Maybe even a calculation on the profile. Would be cool actually.
About the 100 the posting received. It's exactly the point - it's the posting that receives / is weighted with 100 points. This to ensure that the most important posting is easily found. This has nothing to do with karma points (as far as I know).
It's a good idea, will do an karma points page in the wiki so people can see how this works, and what is rewarded and what is not. But please note that the amount of points will change over time as we learn how people use the site and how some actions can be exploited.
But just to give you the overview:
You can reward items on the site by voting the up/down, this will always give the item a set amount of points, but might also reward the "owner" of the item, f.ex. the topic starter. It might also reward the person voting. So we have 3 amounts of points, the points the item receives, the amount the owner of the item receives, and an amount of points the person performing the vote receives.
