I realise it could be problematic changing some of the default behaviour in umbraco but there are a few default behaviours which we have to modify on every site (or should modify on every site) to meet HTTP protocol & SEO best practice.
url redirects should be permanent 301 not temporary 302 Peter has written this package for us to get around this.
umbracoUrlAlias could also be 301 redirect. (or alternatively make use of the canonical link, in which case it remains the template creator's job to add it.)
You can of course write your own packages to get the behaviour you want, I'm suggesting & inviting discussion on is that the 'default' behaviour should be more along these lines.
Are there any other minor tweaks like these that people find themselves doing on 'every' umbraco site?
SEO best practice by default
