It should be possible to mark your own post as solution. It happens frequently that you come up with the solution yourself and in order to help the community I try to briefly write what I did to solve the problem, but there's no way to mark this as the solution (and thus "close" the thread).
I agree that you should be able to mark your own answers as a solution, but to prevent anyone trying to game the karma system, I'd suggest that the answer should have at least 1 vote-up from another community member ... effectively ratifying that the answer is good/valid.

Or just being karma-neutral if you mark your own post as solved? I've often thought about that.
