I am helping a client with their corporate site which is already using Umbraco 4.8.1. they want to redesign (front end) the entire site ( core functionality of the web site will remain pretty much the same).
We are very interested in upgrading the 4.8.1 to the newest version of umbraco as we think it will be much more user friendly to work. looking into the documentation as far as upgrade looks like it is not supported to upgrade from version 4.8.1 to 7. what is the best option that we have as far as upgrade? is it recommended at all?
In the documentation you can see the steps needed to be taken in order to upgrade from 4.8.1 to 7.1.1 - It's not possible to go straight from 4.8.1 to 7. You need to take it step by step. Perhaps some of the steps could be skipped but if it's the first time you're doing an upgrade I think I would follow the steps mentioned.
upgrade v 4.8.1 to v 7
Hi,
I am helping a client with their corporate site which is already using Umbraco 4.8.1. they want to redesign (front end) the entire site ( core functionality of the web site will remain pretty much the same).
I appreciate any feedback on this.
Thank you.

Hi Hoora
In the documentation you can see the steps needed to be taken in order to upgrade from 4.8.1 to 7.1.1 - It's not possible to go straight from 4.8.1 to 7. You need to take it step by step. Also make sure to read the general guidelines.
Before you start upgrading make sure to do a backup of the database and the files.
And if you're using some kind of version control for handling files that would be good since it is fairly easy to rollback if something goes wrong.
Also make sure to download WinMerge.
I have also heard good things about BeyondCompare but have never tried using this myself though.
I hope this helps.
